I'm thinking about going to Brazil for a month in July and I was checking out hostel prices. I noticed that a lot of them doubled or tripled their prices in July. At first I thought it was just the busy season but now I realize it's because of the Pan Am games from 7/13-7/29. Do people think that Rio will just be bad then? Where is a good place to flee to? Should I just not go to Brazil?

I think you should avoid Rio City at that time. There are lots of places to visit in Rio de Janeiro state ( Ilha Grande, Região dos Lagos:Búzios, Arraial do Cabo) e mountain region: Petrópolis, Teresópolis...
There are other amazing places like Chapada Diamantina and Canions (South of Brasil)

The city will be crowded but will be great days with loads of parties and everything. I recommend you to come if you´re interested in partying.

Also lots of police on the streets of Rio during the games. Safer (to an extent). But if you want to flee, maybe small, historic, peaceful places such as Paraty on the coast or Tiradentes in the mountains. Both accessible by bus. Or Ilha Grande. Accessible by bus and then ferry.

Don´t skip it. It will be even better than usual, parties on the beach, loads happening. Nowhere does party atmosphere like Rio, and this will be no different. Not everywhere is charging double, mainly places in Copacabana and Ipanema because they will have the highest demand. But hostels in areas like centro, Santa Teresa and Lapa will keep the prices the same. Sambavilla in Lapa, (where the street parties will be even crazier than they normally are), is keeping its prices at R19, so really cheap, might be worth reserving, could get busy.
Have Fun
