Hello,

I'll travel next week to Brazil and will spend some time in Rio. I heard Santa Teresa is a nice place to stay. Does anybody know if there are some nice hostels? Is it far from the beach? Which places should I visit?

There is the Rio easy hostel which is in Lapa, night life capital of centro Rio on weekends, cool place to explore there is the old bondi tram from the old days of Rio, it's the main transport from centro Rio up to Hill into the little barrio of Santa Teresa, there is a hostel in the community, check hostel world.com or you can rent an apt. or a room in a house, very chilled out area of Rio, much nicer than Copa, have to be bit more carful late at night, but it's a great place...as for sights round Rio, top choice has to be the Floresta da Tijuca, great place to wander through jungle, see monkeys, waterfalls, amazing views of Rio, you can get there via the metro and bus, and dont miss a futerbol match in the maracana, great place to expereince Brasil....VIVA RIO

i visited santa teresa and thought it was a great place. the area i explored was only a few streets long and very quaint with cute artsy shops and cafes. it seemed very small, but maybe i missed alot. i went during the weekend (when the downtown area is very deserted) and i don't consider it located in a safe area. i'm a woman travelling alone and would have been very uncomfortable staying in that area. it's also not close to the beach.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your answers. I arrived in Rio 25 of july and I'm still here! Visited most of the neigbourhoods of Rio and for me the place to be is Santa Teresa. It's not realy close to the beach (20min by bus) but it offers a diferent view of Rio and it's close to Lapa. I checked hostels on those sites and found a hostel in Santa Teresa, Trip Hostel, which is realy nice. There's a great pool so I'm now an expert in "Sinuca". Breakfast is great also, served outside where you can see little monkies in the trees!!! I highly recomand it.
I took that yellow "bonde" and will never forget it as it always breaks down but I'm now used to it!!! I still have to go to Tijuca forest, there's always something to do in Lapa and Santa Teresa that I didn't found time yet for that.

Thanks again for yours replies. They were a great help

Emma
