Hey guys!

I'm planning a trip to Brazil with my GF, and since we both enjoy hiking and camping, we wanted to drop by Ilha Grande and do some nature life.

We'd be dropping in Abraão and leaving after 4 days from the same location, and plan to hike all around the island as far as we can go. Have any of you already camped there, especially oustide of Abraão? What were your experiences and which camping sites would you recommend?

Also, how feasible / bearable is it to hike for a long time (6~8 hs per day) on the island on March? Have any of you, especially from colder regions (e.g. Michigan) done it around that time?

Any exprience and comment will be useful!

Thanks!

AG

Haven't been there in March, but I've been there in both December and April, and been up and down the Costa Verde at all times of the year. Honestly, the time of year makes very little difference except in your chance of rain (March you'll have a good chance of rain). I don't mind the climate for hiking at any time of year, but it can be hot, and just be prepared: hike with lots of water. I can't really think of a 4-day round-trip. Maybe across the island to Dois Rios (can camp there), then along to Lopes Mendes, and finally back across the island. The problem with this is that there is no official trail from Caxadaço to Lopes Mendes, so the trail that's there is quite narrow and overgrown. But it's still doable (plenty of people hike the full loop around the island).

Another option is to stay in Abraão and do day walks. There's plenty of full day trips from Abraão: across the island to Dois Rios, along the coast to Saco do Ceu, past waterfalls and ruins, up the Pico do Papagaio, along the coast the other way. Just check out the maps of the routes (google hiking ilha grande) and figure out what you want.
