This is news to me. So the city has another airport - -Gaurulhos -- for international flights?

Yes and given Congonhas is virtually closed at present, Guarulhos is pretty much the only major airport left in SP.

Guarulhos is the airport most tourists now, since it is the hub for most international flights (Rio´s Tom Jobim Airport probably second). Congonhas is closed right now, and there has been a rippling effect across the country. Government has prohibited sale of tickets for flights leaving from there until the runway situation is resolved. Flights have been switched to Guarulhos and Viracopos airports. If you are scheduled to land or leave from Congonhas, check with your airlines. Gol airlines has suggested passengers avoid flying anywhere until July 30 if possible (by which time they hope the crisis has been resolved; it is also the end of the big holiday vacation period). According to local news reports, yesterday 37.4% of flights nationwide were late by at least an hour, and 18.9% were canceled. In Fortaleza, where 74% of flights were at least an hour late, passengers fed-up with their wait, invaded a Gol plane on the tarmac.. Bottom line is that if you are flying in Brazil anytime soon, build in lots of extra time for connections, and do not bank on flights into or out of Congonhas. BTW, from the U.S. you can avoid Sao Paulo by flying TAM Miami-Fortaleza.
