I am a female travelling solo to Salvador and Rio for 9 days over Easter. I am looking at booking accommodation now as being the Easter things will get booked up. I have stayed in hostels on previous trips when I have travelled solo and enjoyed meeting new people. . I was thinking about trying Air BnB for this trip but unsure about doing it solo. Has anyone booked Air BnB in one or both of those cities. What was your experience? Would you advice me to book hostels instead. If so where would you recommend staying. I'm not really looking for a party hostel.

There is a nice looking and not expensive hostel called Tiki in Rio, not far from Ipanema. We are going to stay there in March, so I will be able to provide a report for you before Easter. :)
