Has anyone done this trip? It is worth the adventure? Interesting places to spend the night?

Otherwise i am just going to get a direct ticket from BA to Iguazu and back.

Plenty have done it. It all depends on time. If its one night, I'd probably just go direct.

If you rent a car you could go down from Iguacu falls trough the South of Brazil.

Lots of interesting cities such as Maringa, Curitiba, Blumenau, Pomerode, Balneario Camboriu, Florianopolis, etc...

Just remember that if you do, you will pay at least R$1,00 per every kilometre as an additional surcharge if you drop the car off anywhere but the location you rented it. Expensive trip.
