I am a 21 year old male, who would like to find AA meetings in Brazil if possible. I have a drinking problem and it's going to be hard for me to travel and not drink. When i drink, bad things happen and Brazil seems like a dangerous place to be testing this out. Thanks!

How is your Portuguese? I doubt they have AA meetings in English.

But I think it would be a much better idea to tackle your problem before travelling. Way too many temptations otherwise, and if bad things happen when you are drunk you are not going to make yourself a popular guy with fellow travellers.

I'm really impressed - good on you!

http://www.alcoolicosanonimos.org.br/ (in Portuguese though - otherwise go to http://world.altavista.com and type in the address to be translated into English)

Based on your earlier posting, this newest one looks like a troll.

BubbaK you should give your expert advice for the OP... after all you've got plenty of experience on AA meetings in Brazil buddy.

Maybe someone who knows more about this issue can clarify this, but I believe that alcoholism is a lifetime addiction and not a problem that is tackled at home before you go travel. It is a change in habit and your thought process and the OP is trying to follow the steps necessary to stay sober. There is no reason to not travel as this is a monkey on your back no matter where you are. Good luck OP, unfortunately I do agree that the parts of South America I've been to drinking is a big part, but then it is everywhere other than in some countries with strict religious practices that forbid this.

Brazilian culture is a lot like American culture, and drinkign is a big part of it. However, if you don't speak Portuguese, you will not be tempted ot drink and smooze as you would in the USA. I suggest that you consider going to a country where drinking is largely verbotten. For example, the islands off NE Malaysia, or a number of places where the Muslim culture is predominate. Also, China is a place where drinking is uncommon. Try some place that will not tempt you too much. I have had a drinking problem and now drink nothing at all. My personal feeling is that the solution is within you and not in the form of avoiding any temptation. If you knew what drinking does to your heart and how it shortens your life and makes you vulnerable to strokes and heart attacks, you would not have so much problem looking alcohol straight in the eye with contempt for it.

#6 I would disagree with you on China being uncommon for drinkers.. every single business trip I've taken there, the drinking starts from lunch. This is the same for China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc.. lunch to discuss business and out comes the HARD LIQUOR.. and these local guys just slam down glass after glass while eating.. I can drink but not like that and not that early in the day.

There are AA meetings in English all around the world... anywhere there are English speakers, whether local or expat. I do not know of any specific ones in Brazil, but try this site: Alchoholics Anonymous - How to find a meeting. If you scroll down the page you can open a pdf that will give you central office locations. Contact the Brazilian offices and you might be able to find local meetings.

And you know, if you can't find any meetings in English, I do not think it would be a bad idea to attend one in Portugese if you want to... it might help you just to be there.
