Hi guys
can anyone recomend a clean , safe place near the old historical centre or should I stay out of town? I am past the partying age but do like to see real life !
I was there many years ago in 1983 but long forgotten now!

When Pelourinho was developed for tourists, locals were made to move their real lives. Since then, contiguous streets with views and character have been heavily developed for tourist pousadas. In the area, you will see real life up close as local kids who are sent there to beg and other locals hoping to profit from tourists solicit you. You can go off the beaten path to some smaller real life side streets and make your contribution to support the real local economy by "direct transfer".
However, you need not stay "out of town". There are residential neighborhoods nearby, like Barra and Rio Vermelho, that have tourist hotels/pousadas/hostels, as well as apartments for locals and tourists.

The Laranjeiras Hostel has private rooms, is reasonably priced and set in the heart of the Pelourinho. Not quite sure what, out of town means to you but really there's no need to stay outside the typical tourist haunts. Most of the accommodation options palatable to tourists are either in the Centro Histórico, Barra or Rio Vermelho, including backpacker type accommodation. The really cheap accommodation is to be found in Centro but I doubt it would appeal.
