Anyone have any favorite beers in Brazil? (specifically in Rio) I'm from Seattle, and wonder if any beers in Rio will be like the ales I'm used to (and prefer) - browns and ambers? Would like brand names to ask for, since I'm hoping for something that does NOT taste like Budweiser or Miller or similar. Any good suggestions? We leave in 6 days....and never thought to ask this!

I'm rather partial to Xingu Preta myself, a black lager. Personally I'm not fond of Kaiser or Nova Schin, bloody awful in fact. Bohemia isn't a bad drop. Most mainstream beers are pilsner/ lager types but ideal for the climate. Don't just limit yourself to beer though, do try some pinga. The Acadamia da Cachaça in Leblon is a good start point they have a reasonable selection of some quite good types.

Nova Schin is the buweiser of brazil terrible beer. Brahma is the glass icy cold is alright-second going to the Academia de Cachaca for drinks. The dark beers are okay really sweet nothing like Seattles tasty mico-brews. But, cant go wrong with a ice cold Bohemia really clean crisp beer they have dark lager that it pretty good...ENJOY YOUR TRIP

The No.1 popular one is without any doubt SKOL. Brown beer? Never saw one when I was there, at least not in the bars frequented by locals...

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Devassa - they make a variety of dark beers, and have a few restaurant/bars around the city, plus you can buy in a supermarket.

Devassa is a microbrewery in Rio, they also own several bars around the city, also called Devassa, popular with the middle class. They make 3 basic beers, a lager (Loira), an ale, (Ruiva), & a black beer (Pretinha, I think), draught or bottle. My favourite is bottled Ruiva, top fermented like a British ale, reminds me of Fuller's London Pride. They've also started marketing an India Pale Ale, draught only, except it isn't really like an IPA, it's dark & strong, more like Fuller's ESB. For my money Devassa is the best beer you'll find in Rio.

When in Brazil try the local beer called Bohemia (not to be confused with other Bohemias avaiable around the world). It comes from a smaller brewery I think somewhere around Rio de Janeiro. My information is about 2 years old but it was widely available almost in any of Copacobana/Ipanema supermarkets. As for popular Brahma, drink it on draft and on draft only. It's available in any bar. If you'd want to feel difference get the same brand in a bottle or can and you'd never believe you're drinking the same beer
