Hi all,

I have searched this topic as I know it is one that many people have asked questions about - but a lot of the information seems to contradict each other, so I would like to ask my question here.

I am a UK citizen and intend to stay in Brazil for about three months - I am aiming for 90 days so as to not have to worry about overstaying my initial visa. However, it would be nice to have a bit of flexibility to stay, say 100 days or so. About two months into my stay, I am intending to visit Iguazu Falls, where I will visit the Argentine side of the waterfalls. If I exit Brazil to do this, and stay the night in Argentina, would I be granted a fresh 90 day visa?

It will be my first time in Brazil.

Many thanks in advance

Maybe I will not answer directly your question but in the FAQ session there's an information that can help you.

When I made my passport I was close to the session where foreigners were asking for visa extension. Since you have a signed contract with an employer will not be difficult to stay here as much as you contract establish.

If you are coming to Minas Gerais state or Belo Horizonte capital let me know, maybe I can help you more.

Be welcome to Brazil.

Overstaying your visa:
- Foreigners are permitted to be in Brazil a maximum of 180 days in a 365 day period. Once you have been in the country 180 days ( and the count starts from your first date of entry, regardless of whether you leave the country and return later or not ), you must stay out for another 180 days. Do not forget that after 90 days you must go to the Policia Federal to get an extension for the next 90 days ( for a total of 180 days ).
- The effectiveness of these rules is subject to how well the person at the Brazilian passport control looks at your passport / visa / entry and exit stamps. Sometimes they do not even glance at it, and sometimes they do. If you are planning on repeated, long-term visits to Brazil, you had better stay within the rules to avoid problems.
- The fine is approximately eight reais per day for a maximum of 800 reais. You can pay the fine before leaving, or wait until you return to Brazil and pay upon entry. The stamp does NOT bar you from ever entering Brazil again, as long as you pay the fine and stay away for six months.
- If you are caught with an expired visa, you will get 7 days to leave the country, plus you'll have to pay the fine and stay out of the country for 6 months.
- Typical thread on visa overstay: lesson learned? Don't ask. Want more proof? Read this other thread .

No need to make border runs, no need to pay fines. If you leave Brazil during the 90 days then the clock stops. You will not be granted an additional 90 days but you will have the credit of those days remaining from the original 90.

If you wish to stay beyond 90 days (max 180 in any year, taken from date of first entry) then you simply go to the PF before your 90 days expires and apply for an extension. There is a small fee and the extension is granted up to an additional 90 days ( at the discretion of the PF). It is usual for most who apply to get the full 90 days if they are entitled to the extension. You will need to locate the right PF delegacia. I posted a link to the PF website a month or two back which lists all their locations if you search back through the threads.

You don't need or get a VISA as a UK passport holder, so you can't overstay what you don't have.
You get a PRAZO, a stay, on arrival, of 90 days.

Leaving the country doesn't reset it, but you can go to the PF and get an extension, or you can overstay.
