I realize there is a lot of information on this topic. I am in Belem, trying to go to Manaus. Prices at the dock from the people working around, not in, the ticket booths (which were empty) have much lower prices than the travel agency in LP. The travel agency man says not to trust them, you will not get what you pay for, etc. Does anyone have advice on the safest, cheapest place to buy a ticketd? Thanks.

As far as I know, there are only 2 classes on the boat. cabins or hammock. The hammock is definatly the best adventure for the trip, just quite crowded but really a great experience! Taking the cabin, is boring. I would prefer to fly in this case

Go with the agency. I have heard of false ticket sales. The price can probably be argued down (I think it's roughly R$90 to Santarém, R$80 Santarém - Manaus)

Does anyone know the cost, please, of the Cabin Belem to Manaus.
What is the matter with a Cabin, anyway, and better security of one´s baggage.

I am on the boat now, stopped at Santarem. I paid 400r for a suite, with bath. Two girls from England next to me got the same cabin fr 350 each buying tickets from a hostel in Sao Luis. We are the only non Brazilian out of about 200 on the boat. Flying was much cheaper on GOL, but I wanted to see the river and since I am not young, did not trust my ability to sleep in the hammock. The ticket place in Belem was not open when I went and the peoplle hanging around were selling cabins for 300, hammock spaces for 160; I got a good cabin and the travel agency spoke English so I am happy. The hammock area is ac but still hot and crowded, and I think this is not the busiest season. The cabins and beds are comfortable. If you have a group of people and can stake out a spot for hammocks, it should be fun. Bags are left out in the open. I did not bring enough water, there is no bottled water on board except very small bottles for sale. Also, water to wash with is from the river, and LP warns in health section about schistomaisis from lake and river water. We have decided to be dirty for five days. The younger girls were disappointed that there were not more backpackers on board. Its not a lot of excitement but I find the river and life fascinating and am very glad I took the trip.

Other than going down to the docks since I only get into Belem on the Sunday of that week, can you get a cabin by going to an agency within Brazil? I am in communication with an agent in Belem and they are quoting me USD900/cabin, USD970/suite, which seems ridiculously high. I will be in Brazil but not in Belem until the Sunday of the week I hope to get on a boat, which most, I believe depart on Tuesdays. Anyone with 2008-09 prices and suggestions? I realize prices go up each year but USD900+ seems high. Any suggestions would be helpful...

That's what you get if you contact an agency. Much better prices if you show up at the docks, find the next boat departing and book with the staff.
