Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster here. I am doing a 4 month South America trek starting in January. I really would like to check out Carnival in Oruro, however I am having trouble finding accomodations.

For those of you that have been there during this time, what kind of prices should I expect to pay for accomodations during that time. Ideally I would like to stay in a hostel, however it seems tough to get ahold of them online. One hotel did get back to me and quoted me $450 USD…

Just booked my flight today, in and out of La Paz May 17 arrival and May 31 departure.

Loosely planned so far:
Arrival at 6 am 5/17
Directly to Rurrebaque for a trip into Madidi (any recommendations on ecolodges or jungle tours and deciding between 3 and 4 day trips would be appreciated)
2-3 days in Lake Titicaca area
Tiwanaku
La Paz 2 days to rest and wander
Salar de Uyuni: would ideally like to start in Tupiza and end in Uyuni for the flight back, but not sure how long the trip to Tupiza is and if…

Turns out I screwed up and have an extra day in my itinerary and figured that since I now have that extra day and since I will already be in Potosi anyway, why not go to Tupiza instead? I could catch a 4 day/3 night salt flat tour which will put me back up in Uyuni (Thursday), the day before I fly out of Uyuni back to La Paz. Plus, the tours out of Tupiza look a lot more exciting than the ones offered out of Uyuni.

How frequent are the busses and how long is the bus ride from Potosi to Tupiza…

I was up in La Paz airport around 3am this morning collecting my wife from the Avianca Bogota to La Paz flight (this is also around the time of a very popular flight arrival from Lima). The processing times for getting through immigration are now CONSIDERABLY longer than before due them the introduction of a near customs procedure. Basically there is one of those systems where you press a button and if your red lighted you get your bags checks. This is a new thing for Bolivia (discussed on some…

Hi,

We are taking one month trip in Chile and Bolivia in December. We will be in Uyuni flat during Christmas time. Do the tour agencies operate during christmas time / christmas day? According to our current plan -

Dec 21 - we will take overnight bus from La Paz to Uyuni
Dec 22 - we would like to find a 3-day tour of Uyuni flat, but end in Laguna Blanca
Dec 25 - we want to stay in Laguna Blanca overnight, and find a guide to take us to climb Licancabur.
Dec 26 - 27 we have for the climb, prepared…

So, I am flying to La Paz very soon. I am Canadian so as far as I know I don't need a visa, however, I have read that to get in I will need to show a return ticket or some other proof of how I will leave the country. The detail is that my return ticket is out of Lima three weeks later. I plan to leave Bolivia by bus which I do not have a ticket for, I'm just going to buy it from the bus place there. Should I be expecting difficulty? I would appreciate if anyone could share a similar experience…

We're in Tupiza at the moment. Tomorrow we're going to start our 4 salar de uyuni tour.
We will end the trip in Uyuni. From Uyuni we want to go to Potosi.
What are our best options (bus, train, minibus) to get to Potosi? We just spend 18 hours in a local bus from La Paz to Tupiza. I hear so many different travel times for the road between Uyuni and Potosi (from 3 to 7 hours).
What's our best (still not expensive (taxi) option? Thanks!

Tim

Good morning,

I'm going to be backpacking through Bolivia and then Peru for a month or two starting at the end of March or beginning of April. I'm still working on my itinerary and a lot will probably depend on the weather but one of the main questions I have right now is where I'm going to be sleeping. The only people I know who have traveled through either country have just stayed in hostels but I was wondering if it is possible and feasible to just pack a tent or hammock and camp in…
