Hi!
We want to know if it´s possible to visit the Salar in only one day from La Paz (most likely traveling by night bus)

We are going to be in Copacabana on Sept. 26th and would want to visit the Salar on the 27th and then take a flight to Cusco on 28th morning.

So the combination would be:
- Copacabana - La Paz: Bus in the afternoon
- La Paz - Uyuni: Night bus
- Visit the Salar
- Uyuni - La Paz: Night bus
- La Paz - Cusco: Morning flight

Do you think this is doable?
If so... can you give us some tips (such as bus companies)???

Many thanks in advance!!! ^_^

Check flights from La Paz down to Uyuni (and return flights). If you can get down and back in a day you'll have enough time. It doesn't take long to get out to the Salar from Uyuni for a day trip.

I don't think getting the bus will be great as they are generally late and that route is pretty bad.

I did not know there wer flights La Paz-Uyuni.... but they are quite expensive ($340)

I hope somebody can provide a cheaper option

Agree with trent84. Check out Amaszonas flights La Paz-Uyuni.
But frankly it sounds very rushed.

Bus is too rushed. And has the risk of being blocked or delayed. You really don't have much time. You can try booking a tour in La Paz - they will sort out flights/tour to the Salar. But they might not be so cheap.

By bus almost impossible. Maybe literally impossible if there is a transport strike somewhere. Strikes are quite frequent in Bolivia. Your only chance would be by air.

Well, strikes are possible as we have seen lately again, but in 95% of the time there's no problem going by bus and especially the tourist bus between La Paz and Uyuni is very reliable and comfortable... And most of the time you will know if there could be bloqueos several days before, so if there is a rumour about it obviously you shouldn't rely on buses to be at the airport in time.
I think it is possible to do all that in one day even if it's a tight schedule. One problem could be the reservation of the bus because in high season it fills up quickly so you should book it several days before, especially when you can't wait one day to take an other bus. If the flight in La Paz is early in the morning you won't arrive at time, so it also depends from that... In comparison to normal buses this one doesn't stop in El Alto, but you could ask the driver to drop you before descending to La Paz to get to the airport faster... But as I said, depends on the time you need to be at the airport.

Wow - my instinct would be to say no. Its very impractical. If all goes smoothly it might just be possible. But this is Bolivia and smoothly is not what its about - I'd say fly or dont go - sorry!

So.... after reading all your comments and dealing with prices, we decided to leave the Salar out of the trip :_(

It was going to be TOO STRESSFUL and RISKY or REALLY EXPENSIVE.... so it will have to wait until next visit to Bolivia

Thank you for all your comments and ideas!!!
