ok, i have cut my time in bolivia short so i can go meet my best friend in rio... i will have 10 days in which to get from la paz down south to somewhere interesting (i was thinking tupiza so i can horseback ride) and then do just the 1 or 2 day trip to the salar from there and head back to la paz before my flight. can i have your esteemed advice? which city is most worth seeing: sucre?, potosi?, tupiza?... can i do them all justice in 10 days? and is it even possible to do a 1 or 2 day salar trip from tupiza? (if not i will probably try to do sucre and potosi and the side trip to the salar and then back up).
thanks!

As far as im aware the Salar trip to Tupiza or from Tupiza is usually 4 days, you could make it 2 days but you would spend alot of time driving and you would have to find another 5 others who were keen, i would say dont miss Potosi as the mine is great, have fun
Hi there. Yes, the trips from Tupiza are 4 days - going one way to Uyuni. The first 3 days are just driving through different types of scenery (deserts, volcanoes, coloured lakes) and then you see the salt falts (which are the real highlight) on the morning of the 4th day. Why don't you go to Uyuni and do a half day / day trip from there out to the salt flats, then take the bus down to Tupiza. This will save time! Or, go to Uyuni and take the 4 day tour down to Tupiza - saving a bus ride.
I can highly recommend Tupiza if you want to go horseriding through some great scenery (although the horses might be a bit average). The mountain biking is also great. Overall, Tupiza has great scenery and outdoor activities (which are a bit expensive by Bolivan standards, but then that's not really expensive at all!!). I'd say you need a full 3 days there, if you want to do a few activities. Otherwise, the town itself is pretty small.
Potosi & Sucre are totally different to each other. Really, the only thing to do in Potosi is the mines, which are highly recommended. However, you won't want to visit them if you are scared of small spaces, and heat and not being able to breathe really well because of the altitude & toxic fumes. The city itself is not that attractive, and the elevation makes catching your breath difficult! You only need 2 days. Sucre, on the other hand, is a beautiful city with parks, plazas, and a lovely climate due to its much lower elevation. However, there isn't really much to do there either except chill out, enjoy the fantastic (gringo style) restaurants and bars, the huge central market, and the relaxed environment. You can go on mountain bike or horseriding tours, but they depend on getting minimum numbers to make the price reasonable, and no-one else was interested when we were there. You could spend 2 days or 10, depending on your inclination!

Hi,
I'm in Sucre right now. Beautiful place, not a lot to do, but I need some days to chill out after a week in Parque Noel Kempff Mercado. It's a bit rainy now and tomorrow as well, and also a bit cold, so Tupiza might be better at the moment.
I'm heading to Potosi tomorrow and after that to the Salar, so if you're around we might team up for a tour.
Buen viaje!

I did the one day trip in the Salar and was completely satisfied. I do highly recommend it, especially if you are short on time. You miss the lagunas but save a lot of time not sitting in a car driving around in the salar desert. I mean don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, but from what I was told it gets old after so many hours in a small car. I would skip Potosi and just spend extra days in Sucre instead.
Bus LPB-SRE isnt as bad as it sounds. it is indeed a long journey, but you sleep most of the way as they all depart at 6:30pm anyway. In case you decide to take one, buy the Bus-Cama tickets, way more confortable, its def worth it.
Now if you really want to save time, just take the plane, half an hour and voilá. Then I can also recommend taking a plane to Uyuni. AeroSur has recently added this town as a destination, it does save a lot of time than going by bus from either of the nearest towns and you get to see most of things as I consider everything in Bolivia worthy of a visit.
Good luck.
