Hi everyone,

we are now in La Paz and we are thinking of going to Rurrenabaque and do some of those pampa /jungle/ trips. Does anyone has any experience with these trips? Is it worth it going there? What are the costs? /approx./ Could you recommend us a good guide or an agency?

Thanks for the reply.

All the agencies do exactly the same tours at exactly the same place, although they have different lodges. Yes, you see a lot of animals (although often no anaconda). The price is around 60 $ for 3 days. Beware of possible rains now ... the road fron Rurre to Santa Rosa in such a case may become impossible. I went with Incaland, it was fine.

I highly recommend a group called Mashaquipe (calles Comercio and Santa Cruz, more or less) ; it's a community-conceived and run project that's one of only 10 agencies authorized by the government to run tours within Madidi. It's similar to Chalalan, but cheaper, less rigidly structured, and not government (domestic or int'l) funded. I stumbled on them while wandering around Rurre looking for an agency; I ended up spending 6 days in the jungle with them and was blown away by their expertise, professionalism, friendliness, ideals, and commitment. $60/3 days (as mentioned by the first guy to reply) sounds cheaper than what I was being quoted; it obviously depends on how many people you're traveling with, but the standard seemed to be about $30/day.

We are just back from Rurre. It was just great, we loved it.
Jungle: I would recommend 3 days with Bala Tours, more expensive but worth the difference
Pampa: I would not recommend Bal, more expensive for nothing. People with Indigenos found them good.
Hotel: Oriental was great
Fly there, and fly with Amaszonas, not with TAM
