Avoid the bus company Panasur which deserves La Paz to Uyuni and back. The bus was really crapy and about 40 minutes after we left La Paz we had an accident. The circumstances were unclear but after a u-turn, the bus fell on the right side. We were locked inside, in the dark (it was a night bus) with quiet a lot of injured people. we were lucky because: the side of the road was not a cliff and there was a military post very near. They came, broke a window, call ambulances...
Since then, I read lots of things about Panasur. It seems that many of their buses are in a poor state.
Some travelers will say that this kind of thing is part of the adventure. I accept that we take more risks when traveling in poorer countries, but what's the matter trying minimize them? I would advise to avoid night journeys, or taking better bus company like: Todo Turismo, even better: take the train.
Otherwise, Bolivia is beautiful, enjoy!

Happy to hear you're healthy enough to write this post and sorry to hear of your accident. Hopefully nobody was seriously injured on your bus. If people would only listen to rampant advice including yours that night bus trips in Peru and Bolivia are more prone to accidents and are to be avoided. In Argentina the safety record is a lot better, but for some reason in Peru and Bolivia they just don't seem to get it.
