Back on to the 3d/2n Salt Plain tours - looking at one of the tour operator trips

Does have it returning to Uyuni 6pm'ish - I assumed this was the norm for these trips. Four days is really going to throw me out

Yes 3d/2n and back to Uyuni is pretty normal. Red Planet is a good agency and let you book in advance http://www.redplanetexpedition.com/producto/4/#modulo

When I booked my tour last year in San Pedro de Atacama it was 'normal' for the 3D/2N tour to end at Uyuni. If one wanted to return to SPdA, then they added on an extra day. The same goes for those in Uyuni.
That last day will be very long and very tiring if they do return on the same day. If you leave SPdA at about midday (well the border at least) theres no way you'll get back at 6pm.
The standard 3D/2N tour is one way. Add on an extra day for a return.
Even if they do offer that 'package' that return I would ask about it. I would also add an extra day just to make sure.
The train cemetery is fairly interesting, but all the tours include it on the first day.
As for which agency to use..makes very little difference IMHO.They all share the same drivers, and they pool passengers too..
I'd have a walk around and see what prices you are offered...that will almost always get you a much better price than booking in advance.

Hi, trent84 on #12 my 3D/2N would be starting in Uyuni and ending in Uyuni so i assume only if your starting in SPdA and returning to SPdA to you need the 4th Day?

Yes. Uyuni-Uyuni is just 3 days.
Regarding buses from Potosí to Uyuni, as far as I know there are only buses at 12 PM and and at 6 PM. But there is no reason to go in the morning. If you leave Potosí at 6 pm then you'll arrive at about 10 pm, you can buy the 3 day tour the same day and next day you start.... so, there's only the small problem that no tours are leaving on this particular day...
So I would reverse the trip and skip Cochabamba, it's not that special.

I guess this depends on what you arrange. We visited the train cemetery the day before setting off across the Salar, met our guide in the evening, and then headed off west and south the following morning.
The buses from Potosi were much more regular than that when we were there last year (June) - we actually missed the bus we'd been intending to get on and only had to wait about an hour for the next one - this was around 2ish, which meant we arrived early evening in Uyuni. We got fixated on going with a particular tour company and they didnt have any space for the next day, so yes arrive at 10 and book your tour if you don't mind any old company, but if you want to shop around a bit and are a bit fussier, it may be better to arrive a little earlier (or see if you can book in advance)

What's the earliest Bus from Potosi to Uyuni. I dont mind leaving early if it gets me there at 8-9 am. Are there shared taxi's to Uyuni that would be faster?
