We're cycling through SA and are currently in La Paz. Can anyone tell me either directly, or where a source of info is, for determining which of the roads/highways through Bolivia are paved? I hear the roads in the south going to the Argentine border are all dirt?? Anyone know where that info exists? Many Thanks!

The ABC website is a useful source of info re roadworks, blockades and similar, not sure if it distinguishes between paved and dirt roads though (click on a route or department for full details).
I'm pretty sure the Potosi - Villazon road is now mostly paved, as is the Tarija - Bermejo road. Back roads to the Argentine border or in that area are probably dirt.

Most Bolivian roads are either unpaved or, if paved, are only 1.5 lane with pull-outs. The road from La Paz to Oruro is paved and multi-lane as far as I recall, and the new road from La Paz to Coroico is fully paved and multi-lane as well. Beyond Coroico it's all dirt. Cochabamba-La Paz is at least mostly paved but it's 1.5 lane. Santa Cruz-Samaipata is paved, but I don't recall the lane situation.
I believe the road from La Paz to the border crossing at Desaguadero is 1.5 lane paved, as is the road to Copacabana.
As far as I recall, that's pretty well it for the roads I traveled on. Although I've seen pictures of nice-looking paved roads from the Oriente...
