We are currently in lovely Tupiza and are aiming to ravel up to La Paz overnight this Thursday. However to our horror we have heard that there is some kind of strike and that the motorways will be closed!
Firstly does anyone know if this is true? Secondly if it is when does the strike end? And lastly are there any other ways to get there?
We heard there is a train but it only goes part of the way, after that you require the roads again.
Cheers
Alex

bolivia will be completely shut down tomorrow (wednesday) the 14th. airports, buses, micros, trufis, taxis, you name it... it wil last from 9am til 6pm (im pretty sure). from what i hear, dont plan on going anywhere unless you are walking or biking. also, if you arrange some kind of private transportion, this also is no guarantee because it is a true "bloqeo." roads will be legit blocked and the people will not let you pass. excercise a bit of caution tomorrow.
Today Wed is 24 hr transport strike. Should be just today but depending on negotiations (theres a whole load of other problems behind the scenes in Bolivia) may possibly go on longer. More risk of protests getting violent in big cities (police out in force in La Paz so private transport can circulate without being attacked by drunken drivers!); in Tupiza should be peaceful and some great walks nearby to pass the day(s)! Train goes as far as Oruro which is 3-4hrs by bus from La Paz, not sure if it affected by strike (which is mostly long distance buses and trucks protesting about diesel shortages and price increases). There are often taxis in Oruro that are prepared to take you to La Paz bypassing road blocks on back routes depending on how serious the protests are. Keep an eye on local media, TV news, hostal owners, bus companies etc for updates.
