Anyone have any suggestions for mid range hotel in LaPaz? Any district a preferred location for both proximity for exploring the city and safety? Every city has its prime locations as well as places you want to avoid. Hoping to hear what others have found in their travels.

Hotel Rosario, on Illampu. In my opinion, it's the only hotel in La Paz that's worth what you pay--and it's a really lovely spot with fantastic service and two good restaurants. My wife and I stayed there on two separate occasions while suffering from travel bugs picked up elsewhere in the country, and the staff were wonderfully helpful--making us recovery food like trout and potatoes, for instance.

When I was there two years ago, a comfortable double room went for $70 US per night.

The only thing to bear in mind is that that stretch of Illampu gets a little sketchy after 11 pm or so. I was never out that late so I never felt unsafe in the slightest, but that's what I'm told. From the hotel door to the main gringo district is about a 5-10 minute walk, and there's a good variety of street food vendors and restaurants nearby.

Hotel Sagarnaga--$20 a night with private bano and with TV. Very convenient with friendly staff. Their in house Tourist agency is more expensive than other places nearby, however.

Like most hotels in La Paz, it is cold so take thermal underwear. Other backpackers were staying in $5 places and thought I was crazy to pay so much for a room.

Lot of good street vendors with excellent food nearby. Close to inexpensive shopping also--NorthFace down vests for $6 and NF jackets for $10. Nice alpaca sweaters for $8. Push Button Switchblade knifes for 44.

We like the Hotel El Dorado across from Plaza de los Estudiantes.
