I am a US citizen and I´ll be traveling to Bolivia in 2ish weeks from Chile by bus. I wanted to know if it is possible to get the new visa at the border or whether I need to get it at a Bolivian consulate in Chile or Argentina. Also, does the fee need to be in dollars? And will it be a problem if I don´t have my bus ticket out of the country yet? Could a US citizen who has entered Bolivia in the last month please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Jon,

We have a tour agency in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Over the last couple of weeks we spoke to several American tourists doing a tour with us. According to them it was easy to obtain the VISA at the border. They had to pay US$100 and show their yellow fever certificate. These are our experciences so far. The ´official´ requierments can be found here

In anyone else has had other experiences, I would be interested to know about them.

Saludos, Gijs

My husband and I entered in Puerto Quijarro (Brazilian Border) and had no problem getting a visa. The only dificulty was that there whas no copy machine around to make a copy of the passport (our fault, we did not know about the visa requirement). After really checking all options, they gave us a 5 year visa without a copy of the passport.

Bring the required documents and you should be fine. They will take bolivianos or dollars.

Good luck
