Where to stay in Mendoza (and what to do)

I saw on another forum post that someone recommended staying outside of the town of Mendoza rather than in the middle of town, so I'm looking for advice on where we should stay . This is for a party of 3 friends in our 30's. We're looking to drink wine, and hopefully go for a hike. We're experienced hikers from Seattle, so recommendations for a day hike would be most welcome. We don't plan to have a car, so I'm also curious how we can do that. Any additional thoughts on things to do would be greatly appreciated.

Well, staying in the city centre may be more interesting.

You could take local buses from the city bus station for some hikes, but not the best ones. You need to book a van to go to the best hikes, such as Vallecitos.

Also, you may find that the options for wine tours or for local buses to wineries may be better from the centre of the city.
