A friend and I will be spending three weeks in Buenos Aires and then we are planning a 12 day trip/loop up to Iguazu Falls, then to Cordoba and then to Rosario. We were thinking of spending about 3 nights or so in each location, but we weren't sure the sufficient amount of time we should stay in each location. Are there other things to day at Iguazu Falls then see the falls? and What is the appropriate amount of time to stay Cordoba on a 12 day loop like this?
Thanks.

I wouldn't do Cordoba nor Rosario if i had 10 days. Salta and Mendoza hands down.
2 Days in Iguazu, 5 days in salta and surrounding and 5 days in mendoza. You can tweak the number of days a bit if you want.
Rent a car in Salta (some are in jujuy tho, but you won't sleep there), and go to (trust me), Purmamarca, Tilcara, Salinas Grandes, Cafayate).
If it's two of you, renting a car is THE best option. Price wise, too.

Then go to mendoza and get drunk every single day. enjoy the view if you are sober somehow.

I agree at all with the paragraph above. A 12 day trip shouldn't waste time in Rosario nor Cordoba. In Salta you should add a remote place called Iruya, it's really amazing. Be careful driving the car in the northern routes, they can be dangerous.

Previous reports:

Rosario and Santa Fe are not important destinations for international travellers.

I have heard good things about Rosario (both from the Lonely Planet guide and from people who have actually been there). It is not an important tourist destination but may be a nice place to stop, although a little off the Iguazu route.

We hated Rosario and we loved Posadas.

We visited Rosario a month ago (April 2007) and really enjoyed this city (for a day). It seemed, to me at least, to be a very laid back place with plenty of good restaurants and bars in the centre and on the riverfront. I walked along the Parana river from the flag monument to the Rambla Catalunya and had a very good day, although I would probably recommend a taxi for the middle section which was pretty industrial.

You'll need one night in Iguazu only. The falls are spectacular, but there's not much else. Do only the Argentine side. It's better.

Córdoba is a nice town with loads of university students. Cool colonial center and kind of laid back.

However, I would say Mendoza if you cen get there. Fabulous city! Trees, cafe culture, wine, great food, the Andes so close...It's my 2nd favorite city in Argentina (following BA), but it's so much more laid back than BA.

I have not been to Salta but I've heard great things about it and want to visit on my next trip.

Re Iguassu Falls. While you are in the area and time not highly critical, then spend two days (maybe third) in that area, Definitely check out Iguassu falls from Argentine side, 1 full day or 1 ½ if arriving on the first day (save ticket for second day to get discount) then get local bus and go over-border to Brazil for a much different aspect of Iguassu Falls (no Visa needed for day trip and second bus is needed to get to falls) and then check out bird sanctuary ( one very full day is needed for all this Brazil side stuff).

for Iguazu 2 days 1 night would be enough, if you arrive on an overnite bus from BA you can easily find somewhere to stay and dump your stuff see the Argentine side of the falls the next day you can pop over to the Brazilian side (a 1/2 day trip) then maybe go to Ciudad del Este for a glimpse of madness (or maybe see the hydro electric dam) or follow advise above. the get back to porto Iguazu in time for the night bus to Mendoza or Salta

I did a loop starting and ending in BA > Mendoza > Cordoba > Iguazu > BA. Spent 2 nights each in Mendoza, Cordoba, and Iguazu. Wish I could have had more time, but was inflexible. I really enjoyed Cordoba.

Thanks for all the info. It has been very helpful in planning my trip. I am curious about the bus transportation and if it is physically feasible to make that sorta loop via bus transportation in 11/12 days time. How long does take to get from BA to Iguazu and then from Iguazu to Cordoba and then from Cordoba to Mendoza and then from Mendoza to BA. Would anyone be able to recommend any reliable bus companies that make these routes?

Thanks a lot!

From BA to Iguazu takes around 13 hrs ie leave at about 6 pm arrive at 7 am from what i remeber.

Crucero del Norte and Andesmar are good companies

Argentine Busses are very comfortable (especialy if you book 'cama' class) so you get a good nights sleep and the food on board can be good too
