We spent 5 weeks in Patagonia.
From El Calafate - strongly suggest make your way to Chalten. Couple of companies run buses to chaletn and you should be able to book it anywhere in town. We booked the perito moreno glacier glacier trek bus to chalten and worked out about 30pesos cheaper than if you did each seperately. This was with the YHA hostel - the big one - I forget the name.
Spend about 4-5 days in El Chalten and walk around the mountain range in that area. Really spectacular. Camping can rebted out, but pricey - almost 30 pesos per night for sl. bag, mat gas and cooking stuff. another 40 for a tent.
From there we flew to ushuia - but you can easily take the bus via Purto Madryn i think. Puerto madryn - couple of friends reported as quite good for seeing orcas. You can go down ruta 40 aswell - but personally thought it was too expensive and not worth 2 days sitting on the bus.
Ushuaia - we stayed at La Posta - a bit pricey - but really nice place. We were too tired to do much else so we just rested here. The park has some a few good walks - the longets one about 4 hours. We hired some horses and and rode around the bay. Took the beagle channel trip - ok i suppose.
You may want to consider going across into Chile and Torres del Paine national park. My best experience. From el calafate - regular buses to Puerto Natales. We stayed at Nancy Hospedaje -a really nice family run place who rent all gear out aswell. Do the full trek 10 days or the W for five days. really good fun in all weather.
Cost wise I think its about 40 pesos to elchalten, accom: we were paying between 20 and 30 pesos per person, the excursion togathre was around 300pesos. The bus to Puerto Natales was US$ 40 equivalent i think. El chalten - no park fees but generally pricey. Free camping available. El calafate - pricey as well - nothing to do here apart from the glacier.
puerto natalaes we spent 4000chilenos for a night at Nancy. Bus to TDP is about 10000chilenos rtn , park fees another 150000 and camping in the park was 2500 chilenos or walk up to the free campsites.
Hope this helps a bit with your plans
