We will be in Buenos Aires over christmas and new year. Any recommendations for places to stay/ things to do?

The following are previous posts on spending Christmas in Buenos Aires. The same goes for New Year.
I was at the Obelisk on 9 de Julio Avenue last year ( home of many crazy football related street partie ) and absolutely NOTHING happened at midnight. The only people going crazy were a bunch of Brazilian tourists. There might be the odd bar that has a party, but do not expect big outdoor parties.
* Mostly a family affair in Buenos Aires from what I have gathered. Not a lot of outdoor party activity. Not a lot of religious activity either, surprising in a Catholic country... Maybe outside Buenos Aires is a surer bet for public Christmas celebration. I was in Cafayate for Easter and people there were very much into the whole church celebration thing. Same thing in Salta. Maybe they are more Christmassy up North. It most probably will be sedate though...
Argentines love to party but New Year is mainly a family-thing. Around 00:00 hours there is absolutely nothing going on in the streets. Very late, around 6:00, some street parties ( not that special ) are kicking of, but it is not easy to find them as a tourist.

I was told that many locals leave Buenos Aires during Christmas / New Year, and visit the beaches of Mar de Plata and Urguay. I think it is also more common to celebrate the night of Christmas eve with a big meal, than the Christmas day.
If you wish to stay in Buenos Aires, I would recommend a good hostel like Tango Backpackers or Milhouse, so at least you will be among some people.
