Hi there!

Yes another question about changing money, but I've done a bit of searching and can't find much info. We're already in Buenos Aires and have been happily changing our money in Florida Street (getting about 15.4 pesos/$ for crisp $100 notes) but we'll be heading over to Uruguay in a couple of weeks to travel for a bit and also stock up on dollars and I'm not sure if we'll return to Argentina via BA.

So my question is how easily is it to get black market pesos outside of Buenos Aires, say in areas such as Iguazu, Salta, Mendoza or Bariloche? (I appreciate it may vary across regions)

Is there normally a market area with people calling out "cambio cambio" or are they harder to track down than that?

For bonus points, how much will the exchange rate vary compared to what we're getting on Florida Street?

Many thanks!

Matthew

You can always find a place that is exchanging money withe the blue rate anywhere you go in Argentina. Ask the staff at your hotel/hostel where to go and what the current rate in that city is. If you wander the streets around the main plaza in any of the cities you mentioned above you will always find someone who can change your money for you. Always be careful with the bills you receive, making sure they are not counterfeit.

I'm not sure what the current rates in those cities are, but when I was in Argentina earlier this year I found that the rates were up to 1.5 pesos less than what I could get in BsAs e.g at that time the blue rate in BsAs was 12.4 and I exchanged money outside of BsAs for anywhere between 11 - 12.

Sorry to hijack this thread.
Is there anywhere in El Calafate that would exchange currency at the blue rate? I presume dollars are the best to exchange?

Thanks,

H

It's easy to exchange money in Calafate - if you go to the main street below the bus station where the tourist shops are and ask around you will be able to find someone who can exchange money for you. Once again, ask at the hotel/hostel and other tourists who have been there for a few days to find out what the current rate there is.

Thanks for the reply NFA, tells me just what I need to know! Widely available but a bit of a drop on the blue rate, but probably still well above the "official" rate.

Also looking at Azimo as an alternative to loading up on dollars in Uruguay then cashing them in at the blue rate in Argentina - but that's not available everywhere and anyway it's always good to have dollars to hand.

Cheers,

Matthew

Hey,

can you recommend any reliable blue rate exchange in Buenos? I fly to Ushuaia and have a 8h stopover after 9pm so I plan to go out and exchange some USD (few hundreds). But as it is already dark I would try to avoid shabby places and waving such an amount of money.

For Mendoza money exchange, and for BA too, see this:

Sent you a PM kefirm.

Good point about using crisp $100 notes - all mine are mint.

Just an update to say I tried Azimo and it worked really well - apart from my bank blocking my card the first time I tried it anyway - ordered online and picked up next day from a transfer office in one of the stations. Waited for about 15 minutes, showed my passport and picked up the money.

Got a rate of about 14.5 pesos/$ so not quite as good as changing dollars cash in Buenos Aires (15.4 pesos at the moment) but will be better outside of BA (though can only use in a few places outside BA) and still much better than the official rate and a great option if you're running low on dollars (as we are)
