Heading to Argentina on Thursday and trying to make a last minute decision about whether to use a web based "Western Union" style service (e.g. Azimo, I know WU don't actually do this) or whether to change dollars into pesos on Calle Florida.

If I change 1,000 pounds to dollars and then assume a rate of 13.7, I will get an extra 2,500 pesos when compared to if I transfer with Azimo - not an insignificant amount.

Changing pounds to dollars here in UK is easy obviously, but how easy and safe is the second bit? Does anyone recommend any particular cuevas?

I would classify changing dollars to pesos with a cambio on Florida as very easy and relatively safe. You can easily find willing money changers; but if you can get a recommendation first, it will make it that much better. Also don't expect to get the current published rate. But you should get something better than a money service like Western Union.

For instance, Jan. 5, I helped someone exchange money through Xoom, that allows transfers through U.S. bank accounts. The published Blue Dollar rate is approximately 13.7. Xoom's rate is 11.8, which drops to about 11.4 with their service fee.

So you will definitely get more pesos for what I consider not that much risk. Just use common sense and ask several places/people for rates, to see what differences there are. Also, only exchange a small amount of money (US$100-200), then more later if you are comfortable with the money changer. Having a second person with you is helpful, so you can concentrate on the transaction without feeling insecure.
