I am traveling with my almost 13 year old son to Argentina Feb 10-19th-- we will spend the 10th-14th in BA, and then will fly to El Calafate on the 14th, returning to BA the night of the 18th.

2 questions about our time in Patagonia:
1) For 2 days we had planned to go to El Chalten and do day hikes around Fitz Roy, but am concerned we will go there and risk getting stuck in bad weather and not see the peaks because they are frequently shrouded in clouds-- I think we'd be disappointed if our 2 days were like this. (worried the fame of this area is really for technical climbers rather than day hikers?) Perhaps there is a better use of these 2 days? For example the Estancia Helsingfors looks like a gorgeous splurge for 2 days with beautiful horseback riding trails/ hikes etc. I cannot tell if the weather is similarly unpredictable in that area. Friends have advised me that a stay at an estancia would be a great thing to do and this is not in our itinerary. We are not wedded to hiking near El Chalten but do really enjoy hikes if there are amazing day hikes that are more of a sure bet. Don't want to be so nearby and miss out on the best part of El Chalten area if it truly is hiking close to Fitz Roy.
2) We will spend 2 nights in El Calafate and do a Perito Moreno glacier ice hike -- would appreciate any advice on an outfitter who provides a hike with crampons out on the glacier, a boat ride and some time on the sightseeing walkways-- I have looked at Helio & Aventura's mini trek (must be 18 for the "big ice") but cannot tell if you could combine the boat ride with the mini trek in the same day or not. I also see there are other highly rated outfitters. Any tips are appreciated!

The weather in February is fine. The only time you'd really need to worry about being stuck due to bad weather would be winter time when there's snow. The country are used to their seasons so regardless of what the weather brings, there's always a way around things
