Hi,

I am currently in Puerto Madryn and looking to fly to Ushuaia from Trelew, and then from Ushuaia to El Calafate. My passport was stolen in Bolivia and I'm currently on an emergency passport, problem is the Bolivian border control didn't give me a visa when I left and entered Argentina (I discovered that I needed a visa when I tried to go to the Brazilian side of Iguazu falls). So I can leave Argentina but I won't be able to re-enter on this current passport.

My question is... Will I be able to take these flights on this passport without a visa? I'm not technically crossing any borders (or am I) if I'm taking flights to and from Argentinian destinations. I've emailed the airlines also and I'm awaiting their response.

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Anthony

I am having trouble understanding your itinerary, and not sure how you got into Argentina on a British ETD and no visa, but they seem to have let you in. You can fly within Argentina, now you are there, as much as you want. You don't need a passport to take a domestic flight, although they may want to see it for identification purposes. You are correct that you will not be able to re-enter Argentina without a visa, although these can be obtained from Argentine consulates. I have no idea how much hassle that is. Note that you need to follow the itinerary you submitted when you got the ETD.

The emergency travel document will only be valid for the journey that you specified when you applied and for a specific period of time. This will be shown on the document.>

once you enter brazil, you can go to a local argentinian embassy and apply for the new visa to re-enter the country.

actually, you can do it now, while in argentina as you are.

and in case you do not have time for doing so and would like to risk it, you can enter the country using the daily buses from iguazu in the brazilian side to argentina. they hardly check for visas, I've heard. but why not simply going to your consulate or just apply for the visa while there?

He doesn't get the visa from his own consulate but from an Argentine consulate outside of Argentina.

Thanks for the response femby. I was unaware I needed a visa when entering Argentina on an ETD, as I told the lady at the embassy who gave me the passport I was going to Chile, then my plans changed. So when they stamped the passport and let me through I didn't think anything of it. It was obviously an error on the part of the border control. I am now in Ushuaia, so it was ok to fly within Argentina without the visa, as you said. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply OFudouMyou! It was actually when I tried to go to the Brazilian side of Iguazu that I discovered I needed a visa! I stood there for 20 minutes while they went out the back and made some phone calls, came back and informed me that I should have obtained a visa, it was a mistake by the border control to let me in without one, and that I could go to the Brazilian side but wouldn't be able to return to Argentina! At least we have learnt for sure that if you sneak into Argentina on an ETD passport without a visa, you can still travel by air within the country!

just beware of the fact that if you get in a flight inside argentina which is connecting people from an international route, then you will probably be asked for a passport and consequently a visa.
When going back to Buenos Aires, if you take an airplane which is the connection flight from people coming from abroad, there may be some customs agents checking things out.

I'm pretty confident I'll be ok now after already taking a flight, but I'll let you know for sure soon enough!
