Hello,
I am American going to visit Argentina next week and want to take the Buquebus ferry to Montevideo from Buenos Aires. Of course I want to get the best ticket price possible. I would like to save money by exchanging my USD on Florida Street for pesos and then going to the Buquebus ticket counter at the terminal and paying cash pesos. But I have heard that foreigners are not allowed to pay cash pesos for an international ticket, only American dollars or credit card. If this is true then I should buy my tickets now on the Buquebus website because the fare may increase as the departure date nears.
So my question is.....as an American can I pay for a ticket to Uruguay at the BsAs Buquebus terminal with Argentine pesos or not???
Thank you for any advice!

You may be able to pay in pesos directly. A friend with a U.S. passport purchased a day tour to Colonia from the Buquebus office in BsAs last week paying in pesos. Six months ago, they made me pay with a U.S. credit card. The rules may have changed or, typically, just not enforced.

The rates fluctuate like airline tickets. Often you can find a promotion or some such discount close to your travel date.

We just got back yesterday from a trip that included Buenos Aries and a side trip to Uruguay. Only Argentine nations are allowed to pay in pesos. We paid by credit card ( no foreign transaction fee) rather than use up our cash.
Given the blue dollar rate at about 15.2 to 1 it was disappointing. Also it's unlikely the fare will change. Just availability.

Hi MWJ.....not the answer I was hoping for but I couldn't ask for more reliable info considering you were just there...Thank you!!! I guess I might as well buy tickets online now and save a trip to the terminal to buy them there.
Any suggestions what to do in Montevideo?? We have about 2 1/2 days there.
Also, do you happen to know are the cambio blue dolar guys around on Florida St on Sundays?
Thanks again for your help!

Hi- We went to Colonia del Sacramento and loved it but we only made a day trip. Sorry that I can't help with Montevideo. Colonia is definitely worth seeing. We exchanged our money at the money exchange offices and did very well. We just stayed away from bank and hotel exchanging. Have a great time.
