Flying into Rio and 3wks later flying out of BA. Wondering how much $$$ to take. Thinking $2000. Can someone please give me some advice on this, taking into account shopping, accom, food, buses etc.

Maybe you could give us a bit more detail?
Shopping: Gucci or local markets? How are your bargaining skills?
Accom: Hilton or hostel?
Food: Restaurant or street stall?
On my trip I spent about US$ 1200 a month (3 years ago, mostly hostels, cheap restaurants, very little shopping).

All depends on what standard of life you want.If you stay in hostels use buses and don't party in the best night spots till late every night 2000 bucks will do amply.I spent just over 2000$ over 31 days staying mostly in mid range hotels,eating out most nights,hiring cars a few times i.e not scrimping at all, so you should be o.k
