Dear all,

We are going to Buenos Aires in late March/early April with a baby. We plan to take a trip to a beach nearby, if the weather is still warm. Can you recommend a good beach in easy reach? I heard that the beaches in Uruguay may be a convenient and nice trip. We would welcome any recommendations!

The nearest beach is San Clemente del Tuyu 300 kms away from Buenos Aires on the Atlantic Coast.

You don't say what kind of beach you are looking for. Buenos Aires is on a river and the beaches are pretty crappy. There are better beaches across the river in Colonia, Uruguay, then further along in Montevideo.

But to get to nicer ocean beaches, you have to go further north in Uruguay (Punta del Este being the most famous) or south towards Mar del Plata in Argentina. Any of those are not day trips, but won't be very crowded at that time of year. The water may be too cold for your tastes, but the further north you go, the better it will be.

Discontinuing the teaching of geography in schools increasingly looks like a blunder on the part of education authorities although I get the impression it's made little discernible impact on most Americans.

Previous post. Beaches in Uruguay.

09-October-2014 post:

Spending a few days in Uruguay the 2nd week of November. We want to see the beaches and ideally would like to stay somewhere fairly low key, off the beaten path a bit but not totally desolate and hopefully will have a local place or two to grab drinks - any recommendations?

Reply:

Definitely Cabo Polonio. In high season it's crawling with porteños but in early November should be lovely and quiet, even if the weather might still be hit and miss. We rented a small holiday house for something like US$13 per day. It was just wonderful!

Previous post. Beaches in Uruguay. Colonia del Sacramento.

19-November-2007 post:

There are decent stretches of beach up by the old moorish bull fighting arena and horse racing track in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, but I think they are more for sitting on and maybe having something to eat from one of the beachside food vendors or an ice cream from a nearby store. You can rent a scooter or bicycle in the town to get up there. It is not far (maybe thirty minutes by bicycle maximum on mostly flat roads) and can easily be included as part of a day trip to Colonia from Buenos Aires. The water seems pretty brown - at least it was on the day I was there. It is probably pretty normal - it just did not look like swimming water although there were people going in.
