Hello

I know this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but i was wondering how much i would need to budget per day for backpacking around Argentina. Im not planning on camping or staying at 5 star hotels, Im happy to stay in hostels,

Thanks in advance

When I was there March through May 2006, I budgeted US$30 per day. That included hostel, eating out one meal a day, and attractions (one a day or so if not free).

I was pleasantly surprised that for US$30 a day in Argentina, I could afford to eat out lunch and dinner and go out to clubs.

If distances aren't too great when you travel, the buses could cost almost the same as a hostel would, thus not being very expensive to move from place to place.

I think US$30 is reasonable and allows you to do a thing or two. With a little more self-catering and only free activities, US$25 or even 20 is realistic.

It seemed to me that Buenos Aires, believe it or not, was less expensive than the rest of the country.

Let's do it the other way around. Tell me what you have in mind (and what does that include: sleeping, food, transport, leissure, etc), and i'll tell you how feasible that is.

Prices in Buenos Aires.

The $ sign seen on the pictures means Pesos. The American Dollar symbol is US$.

I also feel like Buenos Aires is less expensive than other tourist places in Argentina. For me, it was because there were more free or low cost activities like walking tours, parks, museums...etc.

So, outside of the capital, I suggest budgeting a little more than $30USD a day to include activities like tours or transportation if you want to skip the tour companies and do it on your own. Maybe $10USD more.

It really depends on where you go and what you do. Patagonia (Argentina and Chile) is not cheap when you start adding up the tours and entrance fees in the parks and especially the refugios (like hostels) in Torres Del Paine National Park. BA is cheap if you stay in hostels.

The boat trips near El Calafate to the glaciers can be expensive and ice trekking on glaciers and the catamaran across Lago Pehue in Torres Del Paine National Park too.

About U$ 25-30 a day. If staying in hostels, you may wanna invest in a Hostelling International card for discounts in each city.
