Hi all,

I will be travelling to Argentina from 3rd March 2017 till 30th March 2017.
My plan is to explore the country and a possible cruise to Antarctica.
So have got couple of questions :

1) Is is good advice to book for a cruise in advance or better reach Ushuaia and find a deal at last moment ?
2) I have been getting mixed advice on local transportation in Argentina. So is it good advice to rely on public transportation or should opt for self drive car ? Which would be the cheapest one ?

Also I am solo traveller so would love to join any group/person who is travelling during the said time frame.

Closer to the date you can get better prices, but if you already have the approximate date you agree to reserve it in advance to secure the place.
In Argentina the routes are very long to drive alone, you good advice public transport (airplane).
For the cruise rates you can communicate with Info - Best Tour Patagonia EVT (info@best-tourpatagonia.com) or Drake (valeria@drakeevt.com.ar) in Ushuia.

Hello There,

I am just coming back from my first Patagonia or Carretera Austral trip .. It was probably the best holiday I ever had after visiting over 50 countries ..

I only can promise you will love it to go to Carretera Austral via Chile starting at Puerto Monnt and than all the way to VIlla o`higgins .. from there I took some backbackers on my car told me that there is ferry to Punta arenas or Ushuaia and further down ..

Try to research ruta 7 or Carretera Austral and you will see ..
cheers

Re Antarctica, it depends how much you want to go and how flexible your timing is. You can get amazing deals to the peninsula from Ushuaia but you may not get a deal at all. Or it may not be the itinerary you want. Even the shortest trip is about 10 days as you have to get to the Peninsula and back and many are much longer than that. You only have about a month so if Antarctica is a must for you, I'd book.

PS After all of that, I just realised you're hoping to go in March. I'm not even sure how many companies still do Antarctic trips in March, if any, and those that do will be ROUGH. Most trips are from November to Feb and Feb is usually a gamble because of the weather. Skip Antarctica this trip and plan on doing a dedicated trip to the 7th continent at a later date, preferably in January.

The distances are huge, but the road quality is mixed, some gravel on the longer stretches and petrol stations are far apart, so if you are travelling on your own I would definitely either fly or bus it. You can then hire a car in the major towns if you want to explore on your own.
I did a few bus trips, and the buses were fine, clean, on time, drivers drove safely.

Coming in late, but just in case the OP checks in...

I ws in Antarctica two years ago, and did a lot of research of rate trip. As noted, the cruise season is pretty much over by the end of February, although there are some March departures, and I even found an April one.

Even if you find a cruise in March, the experience wouldn't be as good as earlier. The penguin breeding season, for instance, is over. You won't see the giant rookeries full of them--the birds will be spending almost all day out to sea feeding. Port Lockroy, the British base/museum where you send postcards from Antarctica, closes in early March. Some areas may already have enough ice so that the ship can't get through. It is a good time for whales, though.

It will be colder, windier an icier than earlier in the year. You may be able to get a good deal on a last minute cruise in Ushuaia, but you also have to be sure you can get last minute gear. The cruise ship may or may not provide a heavy rain jacket and water proof boots, but you will have to come up with waterproof rain pants (essential) gloves, hats and all that other stuff.
