Tolantongo and Sierra Norte Oaxaca temps in April

Hello,
I am thinking of some last minute travel which should have happened in February or March, but here I am looking at the end of the month into most of April where I have a window of opportunity for last minute travel and little planning time.

I have been to Tolantongo and the Sierra Norte in February and March and temps were fine, except chilly at night in the Sierra, but the fires in the cabanas are nice. Does anyone know if it is too warm to be in Tolantongo in April? I prefer it to be cooler in the day for the warm waters. And for the Sierra Norte, I just do not want it to be too hot during the day, for hiking from village to village.

Our first visit to Tolantogo was in April. Nights were tolerable, in our “ cliff dweller” hotel room, but days were exceedingly hot from about 10:30a.m. to around 5:30 p.m.

I´ve hiked in the sierra norte of Oaxaca in the winter and the summer. It was quite pleasant in the summer, very light intermittent rain and relatively warm, but certainly not too warm for hiking. I would put the daytime highs near 20 C perhaps, depending upon elevation. Of course in April you should still have clear nights which means cold at night, and very cool mornings and evenings. I know this past January was quite cold, and it snowed once up there, so hiking in April would be a joy compared to that.

My last hike to Benito Juarez was a few weeks ago, and the daytime high in Oaxaca city was 30 C. I hiked in long pants and shirt, but I saw a couple of other tourists in shorts! Locals were all wearing long pants, but some had short sleeved shirts.

Hi anonimo-since we did chat via email, I knew you thought it was better in February temperature wise and I am sure I will agree. I can possibly withstand the heat a bit better than you, but then again, I do not see joy in thermal water when the air temp is warm also. Having had some back issues lately, I dreamed of Tolantongo. It was really helpful in 2012 after my 17 months of frozen shoulder, having broken it also.

Thanks mclarjh. Though it was cool at night, the temps during the day were perfect. We did get into rain one day, but did not last long. Long enough to miss out at a viewpoint!
