We are vacationing in August (only time we can go) on the peninsula and would love some advice. After spending a week with friends in Playa Del Carmen we are hoping to visit Campeche and surrounding areas for 5 days. My problem is trying to figure out the best way to get from PDC to Campeche with a 6 year old in the crazy heat. Take a bus, rent a car or try and get a cheap flight from Cancun? We don't have a lot of discretionary income, but we don't have tons of time either. Thanks in advance.

The heat in May is worse than in August (different from what people from further northern latitudes would expect - where summer is often the drier season), because August is rainy season in Yucatan and often cools down a bit in the afternoon - it is hot, but no crazy heat as in May.

A first class bus (air-conditioned) from Cancun via Merida (4 hours plus 2 hours Merida-Campeche if I remember correctly, can´t get ticketbus.com.mx to work to check this) should not be too bad unless you really find traveling with the kid difficult in general.

This would be one of the very few times when I would rent a car. You will really need the ability to stop or go on your own schedule when travelling with kids. Also, the attractions in that area are not served well by public transport and a car will make much better use of your time.

my post 1 was about reassuring re. weather and saying that buses are OK and distances are manageable, but ranchhand1024 is actually right in my opinion:
A rental car would be VERY useful to get around the Campeche state sites and the flat Yucatan with fairly open wide roads and good road signs - even passing Merida which has a pereferico (ring-road) and Cancun are relatively easy to manage, compared to some other regions of Mexico. (I would never recommend anybody to rent a car in Mexico City for example)

I don´t know about rental costs, but for 3 or 4 people a car is possibly affordable compared with 3 or 4 bus tickets
