Booking Flight from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Ahead of Time?Country forums / Mexico / Mexico
Hi all, My wife and I will be in Oaxaca City next month from December 18-22 and will need to get to Puerto Escondido. From the research I've done, flying is going to be the most direct and time efficient way to get there. I've looked into both Aerotucan and Aerovega and am leaning towards Aerotucan. I have the following questions: 1) Are there any flight options anyone prefers? 2) Should I plan to book ahead, or will we be able to book when we arrive in Oaxaca? Aerotucan's website has links to book, but it does not look all that secure. Thanks!
I've flown Aerotucan several times, and am still here to tell about it, so that should attest to their safety record. Presuming you're flying into Oaxaca, I would suggest making your onward reservation at the airport, when you arrive. Their planes are clean, the pilot is capable and friendly; in fact, one time I even flew in the co-pilot's seat, because of a last minute extra passenger. Pretty thrilling, coming into the landing at PE. I know nothing about Aerovega, other than what another poster here has reported, which is all good. The mountain scenery going to PE is wonderful, and then the beach view on the approach to the airport at PE is spectacular. Wish I were going. | 1
Flying is a lot faster than taking the bus, but OCC does offer an overnight option that may interest you. See the ADO website. Note that Aeromar flies between Mexico City and Puerto Escondido. Last time I flew into Puerto Escondido was on a DC-3 that landed on the old gravel airstrip which ended at the cliffs over Bacocho. | 2
Not only Aeromar, but VivaAerobus and Interjet also serve PE from Mexico City, but the OP is planning on going to PE from Oaxaca, not MEX. | 3
Aerotucan is a beautiful flight.A smallish plane that flies low so you get a really good look at the land below you with the enclaves of houses and farms plus the windy road that the vomit comet takes. | 4
If the length of your trip is limited, then the airplane is the better option. But, I prefer the bus with an overnight stop at San Jose del Pacifco, never been sick in all the times I took this route. All of the hype about how nauseated the ride is on the winding road from here to Pochutla, is just to deter travelers from taking it and leaving this less congested. BUen Viaje | 5
I always take a dimenhidrinato tablet before boarding the collective van and don' t have any problem with motion sickness. Aircraft, particularly small ones, are prone to turbulence on mountainous routes during the day. | 6
Thank you all for your input. I am not inquiring about the benefits of taking the bus vs flying. We have made the decision to fly as we have limited time. I am not interested in the bus for this trip. My main point of concern is whether I should book a flight with Aerotucan or another service. I am also concerned with whether I should book ahead of time from my home in the US, or if we should just book our tickets once we land in Oaxaca from Mexico City. We will be in Oaxaca City for four days prior to traveling to Puerto Escondido. | 7
The weekend of 22 Dec 2018 will be very busy with travellers going to the beach. Four days might be enough advance time, not sure. I'll ask at a popular travel agency in the Oaxaca Zocalo to see if they have an opinion about which air transport is better, and lead time to reserve tickets. | 8
Thank you very much!!! I've arranged and planned the rest of our honeymoon meticulously and this is the last, albeit very important, detail. | 9
So I talked to an agent at the travel office at the northwest corner of the Zocalo. They said that Aerovega carries two passengers, and Aerotucan carries 14, but wouldn´t recommend one over another (however from my experience, a turbine engine is much more reliabel than a piston engine). And they recommended booking two weeks in advance, saying there might not be seats only a couple of days in advance. | 10
Thanks for the info! I was wondering the same thing. | 11
Thanks again for the information. I just tried to book online through their website but am having difficulty. I've also tried calling the numbers listed on the website to no avail. I'm wondering if anyone has any input into how I might go about booking ahead of time from the US. | 12
Hey. How did your honeymoon go? I’m thinking of visiting the exact same location for my 30th next year. Will fly from LDN Heathrow on the 30th dec and stay in Mexico for 2 weeks. We land in Oaxaca at 22:30 on the 30th so will have to travel to PE the next day. How did you get on with booking ur flight? Was the journey ok and do you have any recommendations on where to stay for the 2 weeks. Thanks so much | 13
If you're not planning on staying in Oaxaca city at the start of your trip, may as well book a flight from Mexico City direct to Puerto Escondido. There are vans and an overnight first class bus operating to the coast from Oaxaca city, but understand you may need some rest after your flight. | 14
