Hola amigos,

I just got back from my vacation within a vacation to Palenque from San Cristóbal de las Casas (an incredibly wonderful place). I want to share a bit from my time in Palenque.

First, the ruins are incredible. I've spent a fair amount of time in Mexico and visited quite a few non-Mayan sites. Palenque is impressive because it has some carvings/glyphs, a wonderful museum, an awesome setting in the mountain jungle, and a huge size. One does have to pay a toll on the road to the site…

I am a (past)seasoned travelor who can't convert hubby to the rough. All inclusive fits the bill for food and mass drinks. We are always short on travel time(less than 5 nights) and need a quick trip from Portland, OR. Can't afford Maui. If I can't swim in warm clear tropical waters once a year my soul will shrink. Our goals are simple; Clean warm water to swim and snorkel in, decent food, drinks and few children around. Short distance to real culture. Ocean view from private deck.
I…

Xalapa
Posada Santiago on Ursulo Galvan. 280 pesos/night. Pretty courtyard, but: Not recommended. Mouldy and freezing cold. No hot water in bathroom in spite of claims to the contrary.
Hotel Limon on Revolucion #8 (228 817 2204) 200 pesos/night. Tiny room and bath, dark and cramped, single beds. Excellent location, friendly staff. Their single rooms for 150 a night probably a better deal.
Restaurant La Fonda on Enriquez at the corner of Diamente Alley had very good comida corridas for 40 pesos…

ACCOMODATION, and a few restaurant and other recommendations:
All costs for hotel rooms are the total, for a room with 2 double beds, a private bath, a fan and with one exception, a tv. Food prices and admission fees are individual costs.

This is my first posting on TT. It is divided into 3 parts. It is long, practical in its orientation, with many costs, a few comments, some recommendations and one or 2 or warnings. Thanks to all the contributors I read before my own journey, especially John Todd Jr. for his invaluable website http://www.johntoddjr.com/, and for his technical assistance with my first attempts at posting, larpman for his Guide to Mexico, longford for his trip reports and KKJiang, whose posting format provided a…

A friend needs to get to Huatulco, Oaxaca. The flight from Chicago to Mexico City is $200 less than the flight from Chicago to Huatulco. I see on TicketBus that there is a bus from TAPO to Huatulco that only takes 10 hours and is about $50. Does that bus go through the city of Oaxaca or does it go a less mountainous way? Any recommendations?

Please help. I lost my notes. I travelled from Acapulco by bus north (I think it was north but not sure) to a small beach community. We hitched a ride from this small beach community to Puerto Escondido which took about 4 to 5 hours. The only name I can remember about this place is the hotel we stayed in. It was called Restaurant Tomy Hotel. Can anyone out here help me to find this little bit of paradise again. I would really like to know the name of the community. Thanks.

Despite earlier posting to this forum about how you can work around calling toll-free numbers in the US and Canada from here, the answer is that for all practical purposes, you CANNOT call them.

I have a Discover Card account in the US. I had to find out from them via email which pay number I could call to reach them. Customer service there told me that they could forward a card down here to Mexico, but only via US mail, which I told them would not do since it is neither reliable nor safe.

If you…

what's the difference?

I was told that Sayulita hardly ever get no-se-ums.

I was on the beach sitting in front of Captain Pablos when a swarm of bugs that i thought were the no-see-ums were all over us. What was ironic is they showed up within a minutes after a group of musicians with drums and dreadlocks started playing on the beach next to us. BTW the music was very good.

That was the only time i was there that i saw these bugs and i was there for 2 weeks.

Your thoughts.

Do no-see-ums bite? We…
