We, 2 couples in our 50's & 60's, will be staying at a resort in Xpu-Ha the week after Thanksgiving. While a few of us love the resort style vacation, I love finding true authentic Mexican villages. I looked and Valladolid sounds a little too far away. If anyone could please give any suggestions I would really appreciate it. While we were in Huatulco, Oaxaca, I found a nice town square and a textile factory with beautiful clothes and blankets. This is what I'm looking for.

Well if you have a rental car you could visit Macario Gomez, it is outside of Tulum on the road to Coba along with two other smaller villages. Otherwise neaby Chemuyil might suit, many of the workers for the resorts and restaurants, shops, etc. live in this town and there are several good restaurants, La Palapa and Leo's Pizza (has other food besides pizza). The Jungle Place spider monkey sanctuary is just outside Chemuyil but reservations are needed a month or two in advance. You could look into the Akumal Monkey Reserve just outside of Akumal pueblo as well.

I´m not going to try to convince you that Valladolid isn´t too far away, but I did visit several ¨true authentic¨ Mexican towns near there as part of a cycling day trip: Ebtun; Cuncunul; Tekom; Chichimila; (detour to) Xocen.

I´m guessing you´re referring to the town of La Crucecita, which once was a ¨true authentic¨ Mexican town until the residents were kicked out and replaced by the service workers. Still, it´s a lot nicer than Cancun centro, by comparison.
