Hi! I’m a foodie and what to do some research for my restaurant in London. Where is the best foodie place in Mexico? I’m looking to go in January and I will be travelling alone (33yr old woman) or with a child (12yr old boy) so I want to feel safe. If I can also tie in sunshine and a beach that would be great too! Looking to go for 7 or 10 days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Where is the best foodie place in Mexico?

You might get a better response on the Mexico-Central America Branch.

Having advised that ... I think your question is both quite insensitive, and culturally chauvinistic in the extreme!

The best foodie place in Mexico - are you really serious with that approach? But I am biased from the start - I think "foodie" is one of the worst descriptors (and one of the least defensible cultural memes) I have ever encountered.

As if "foodies" know more about food, or appreciate food more, or should ask more questions about food, than anybody else ... especially Mexican locals - for whom getting adequate food each day can be quite a struggle. Think about what you're asking here, please!

Yes,I'd move over to the Mexican branch....

There are lots of good places to eat in the country in my experience, and of course they are not all in one city,or even one region..they are spread out all over the place. But perhaps someone on the Mexico branch can give your their ideas on the best parts of the country to eat in.....IMHO you can't really go wrong with the DF/Puebla area, though that is far away from the sea.

I still don't like the blatant cultural appropriation ... should I just put up with it and shut up?

No,I don't think so (not that it is my business what you write ;-).....you have said what you think, and the OP may answer it,or not. That is what a forum is for, isn't it?

Plus the question misses the point ... the "best" Mexican food is everywhere ... it's what local people prepare and what a local cantina serves.

In conjunction with a restaurant business in London your question is not straighforward to answer. You need to determine what sort of clientele you are hoping to attract. The average British tourist in Mexico will be exposed to dishes sometimes far removed from traditional Mexican cuisine and may well turn-up his nose at something more authentic back home. Foreign tourists however visiting London may be impressed with more genuine Mexican dishes. You just need to think of the Indian onion bhaji as an example, unheard of in India.

Authentic Mexican can be found anywhere in Mexico just a few streets away from tourism but combined with your request for beaches, I'd say the west coast is better than the east (Yucatan) coast. If you're going more for "fast-food" Mexican, then the Yucatan is your oyster.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D
