We (three vegetarians, not vegans -- i.e., eggs and dairy okay) will be in Mexico City at the end of December/early January. Even though we usually don't like "fancy" and wouldn't do a lot of this, we would like to dedicate one evening to a high-end / foodie-type restaurant of the sort that we keep hearing CDMX offers. Any recommendations for a vegetarian-friendly (not necessarily vegetarian-only) option?

Recommendations for mid-range / casual options also welcome. We'll be staying in Condesa but will be eager to explore other neighborhoods.

We have assembled lists from this forum and other sources of several vegetarian-only places; we're finding it a lot harder to identify the places that have fabulous offerings for everyone, vegetarians included.

Thanks!

Lisa

The city has turned into a crazy vegetarian paradise over the last few years, with a huge concentration of everything from taco stands (including the "Por Siempre Vegana," a must visit) to fancier but still rustic places (like "Los Loosers," which started out humble). There are some truly special ones like "Malportaco" which are worth exploring other neighborhoods for... the one called "Don Andres Autentico Sabor de Toluca" in the middle of the Zona Rosa is also incredible; they make their own nut-based meats and everyone I've taken there has been thrilled. "Plan V" is an upscale little place in south Condesa... "VegAmo" near Bellas Artes is a great, creative little spot. Man, now I'm really missing the place... these aren't even the tip of the iceberg.

I'll post some more recommendations later, but the CDMX Happy Cow entry is incredibly helpful for getting a feel for the new landscape. Try viewing it with "City view" and zooming in on Condesa/Roma.

This is a neat interview with Alfonso Cuaron where he mentions a few of his favorite places, including the always pleasant "Pan Comido" (another can't miss, really!) and "Forever Vegano," both in Roma.

Based on his latest film ¨Roma,¨ (which I saw last week), his family`s Mixteco maid made most of his meals growing up.

PS: I know cuitlacoche and cochineal are vegetable, but chapuline too?

Grasshoppers, worms, slugs, flies, beetles, spiders, etc. are all meat... and quite delicious I imagine!

From his restaurant picks, I'm guessing he grew out of maid food. How was it? I heard it was a hell of a work.

Another semi-legendary little stand in Roma right near Plaza Insurgentes: Gartorta, with the most delicious, meatiest, greasiest vegan milanesa, bistec, salchicha, gringas, and... hot damn now I'm getting hungry.

I enjoyed Yug Vegetariano.

For mid-range casual plus – try Saks. There are several locations around the city. It’s an omnivore restaurant but with many nice vegetarian choices. Mediterranean and Mexican food.

I'm reminded of a book launch at our national library by Jan Wong, my favourite foodie, who used to write blunt reviews of restaurants in our national newspaper. She asked, "How do you know if someone at your dinner party is a vegetarian?" Her answer, "Don't worry, they'll let you know!"

If you want to eat vegetarian, join a poor indigenous Mexican. They've been eating tortillas and frijoles, with salt added for seasoning, for centuries. Out of necessity, because they couldn't afford meat.

Funny joke! Definitely never heard that one before. "Foodies" sure are blunt, cool people. Superior than "non-foodies" for sure and boy do they let you know that they are "foodies!"

In Mexico City? The majority eat tacos and and carne asada every day (though I noticed on my last trip that they have a real thing for chilaquiles as well). That description of their diet sounds like it came from some gringo "foodie" book, but yes, the traditional indigenous diet is one of the world's healthiest – though it has nothing to do with them being "poor."

Stylish vegan restaurants are the new "foodie" (whatever TH that means) thing in CDMX, but for those who don't want to go to the hip places like Akarma or Pan Comido or Los Loosers or Purple or Forever, fortunately there are now hundreds of more down-to-earth options veg cantinas, diners, and taco stands all across the city. It's a new mundo.
