Yes Mexico has certain times when beach areas hard to access. One is Christmas time. Another is Easter time and the third is August. If not going to a beach area no problem. Suggest you visit Merida in Yucatan. Wonderful and photos at wolf calls .com. No problems with hotels there. see Yusatan today .com for info on this historic area. But be ware in Summer all of 'Yucatan is
HOT.

Patty is absolutely correct, where I am on the Pacific Coast the summer vacation starts about July 15th. and ends about August 15th ......Hotels and restaurants both raise their prices ............

I guess we are in luck because we where planning on spending time mexico city and oaxaca around during august ,plus we fly in mid august!
Paty i have previously checked out the web pages you mention both help a lot!

Well book any flights early as they get sold out and also the buses. Like I said August is Mexican vacation month. I usually go to Mexico myself the very end of August and stay until mid September. But I make sure I have everything all reserved in advance. I like all the excitement of high season and then all the benefits and sales of low season too.

will do on the booking flights early! when it comes to actually getting from one town to another (buses) I'm not overly worried if we have to wait some days if sold out, more concerned on making sure we find budget accommodation! so will keep in mind reserving places around that time.

Well you will have to contend with Mexican college students for cheap stays, So book early and sew it up. Beach areas are the ones with problems not inland areas.
We where hoping to spend around 90US a day
That's a lot of money. I can't imagine you spending that much, based upon your description of your travel. I spend about 30 USD, that includes hotel, three restaurant meals, and a bit more for museums, local travel, or snacks (near the end of my trip I became addicted to raisins covered with dark chocolate; 7 MXN for 50g or so). Intercity transportation is extra. Check other guide books for cheaper accommodation than lonelyplanet lists.

mclarjh that is really refreshing to hear! does this still apply even though i mean 90US a day for both of us? i should have specified. While i have you i noticed you have posted in previous threads about budget hotels in mexico city, have you got any new hidden gems for the price range you mention? Cheers !

"I'm a fan of arriving to a new places and seeking a place to stay rather than booking ahead. I actually rarely do that unless I'm going away for a weekend. Do you think we will have any problems doing this in Mexico more so villages?"
In general, yes, you can expect to find lodgings available in inland Mexican towns on a walk-in basis. But, some attractive places (Tolantongo Canyon; Cuetzalan, Tepotzlan, Malinalco) have become popular weekend "escape" locations for residents of Mexico City. So, things are more tranquil, and rooms more available, in those places during the work week.
Also, small town accommodations sometimes fill up when special local fiestas are taking place there. Those events can provide visitors with extraordinary experiences, including lots of free entertainment. So, if you have the opportunity to be present during a small town fiesta. it would probably be worth devoting a few days to that endeavor, ideally arriving in the town on a weekday, perhaps two or three days before the events' anticipated climax.
The attractive, highly Indigenous mountain town of Xochiltan, located three and a half hours north of Puebla celebrates its principal fiesta in late August. Xochitlan does not yet receive nearly as many tourists, foreign and domestic, as does Cuetzalan, a larger and better known town in the same region. It appears that Xochitlan is beginning to promote itself, however:
