Hi,
It's been quite a few years since I pass through Mexico City.
I know there are no direct buses from Tepoztlan to Oaxaca.
I know I would have to get to Cuernavaca to get on a bus to any major destination. (The last time we left Tepoztlan to go to Taxco, we booked a taxi to take us from the hotel to a station in Cuernavaca to get us there.)

We plan to travel the morning of Dec 29( Saturday) from Tepoztlan to Oaxaca.
So here are my questions:
I am thinking we're better off going back to Mexico City from Cuernavaca to take one of the many buses headed to Oaxaca. ( I remembered TAPO is the station with the most buses headed to Oaxaca)
Puebla is an option too. Are there many buses headed to Puebla from Cuernavaca, then from Puebla to Oaxaca?
So which station in Cuernavaca do I tell the taxi driver to drop us off if we plan to ride back to Mexico City?

Which station in Cuernavaca do I tell the driver to drop us off if we plan to go to CAPU in Puebla?

Oro has a direct bus from Cuernavaca to Puebla. Their site is:

http://www.autobusesoro.com.mx/

The Oro terminal is on the outskirts of Cuernavaca, not downtown (the address is on the site above).

From Puebla, it should be no problem to move on to Oaxaca.

Much better to go to Puebla if you can. Just like Oro, ADO only offers one night bus each day Cuernavaca to Oaxaca. If you go to Puebla, there are departures throughout the day to Oaxaca, and much faster through Puebla than returning to CDMX.

As mentioned, there is a direct bus from Cuernavaca to Oaxaca daily. There are many more direct buses from Puebla to Oaxaca, and even more from Mexico City to Oaxaca. But surely the leg from Tepoztlan to Cuernavaca, or even Mexico City would be much shorter and direct than to Puebla. As I remember, each of the bus stations in Cuernavaca have service to Mexico City (but can't you go direct from Tepoztlan?)

Yes, but the CDMX to Oaxaca buses go through Puebla. So retreating to Mexico City just makes the trip longer than it should be. Tepoztlan to Puebla is around 2 hours.

Thank you all. I'll plan on taking the bus from Cuernavaca to Puebla, the Puebla to Oaxaca. I knew I could count on the Thorntree Mexico community!

PS anyone know how much time I should account for the taxi ride from Tepoz to Cuernavaca?

The Uber website gives an estimate of 200 to 287 MXN for the trip from Tepoztlan to Cuernavaca. Googe maps gives enroute time about 45 mins. (Of course check to see if the bus stops in Tepoztlan, maybe you can pick it up de paso.)
