Hi everyone,
I will land in Cancun end of the month at around 3pm, and am planning to go straight to Isla Holbox with a rented car. I have two questions related to safety:
-Is it safe to drive right after sunset in this part of Mexico (<9 pm) ? How about that road in particular ?
-Is it safe to take the Holbox ferry after sunset (6-7 pm).

Is it safe? Probably. I'd imagine the ferry is too, if it keeps running @ 6-7 pm. I drove that highway years back and there were plenty of topes. But that was before Holbox was 'discovered'. I don't know if the massive influx of tourist traffic makes it safer or less so. Are you parking and leaving your rental at the puerto? That might be a concern.
Since most all replies about driving at night in Mexico suggest do not do it you might do a little more research on the subject...Sometimes animals will sleep on the asphalt because it retains the heat from the daytime sun, driving through small villages is where dogs could be running through the streets along with the speed bumps ( topes ) every block which most are not painted or signed are very hard to see after dark. then there is drunk drivers to worry about and on rare occasions a robbery...Sunset in Cancun will be about 6:05PM the day of your arrival...Hope this helps.
As has been said before, driving after dusk is at YOUR own peril. Other than the topes everywhere, on a small 2 lane road after dark you may have a cow, horse, donkey or whatever jumping out in front of you out of the bushes.
Happened to an acquaintance and the cow caused $ 3,500.00 worth of damage.
Many years ago I was taking a night bus to Merida, I was suddenly awakened by the brakes being applied in panic mode, as we came around a corner a rather large Brahma bull was sitting in the middle of the road, thank god we had an excellent bus driver.......
Google Maps shows two hours enroute from Cancun airport to Chiquila. And make sure you know when the last ferry crosses.
