Hey there fellow budget travel adventure seekers. Driving from Brownsville to Guatemala all the way through Mexico. Please comment if you know of any issues traveling down the east side of Mexico, through Vera Cruz then over the mountains through Chiapas to the Guatemalan border.

I am going to be traveling overland through the southern U.S. and entering Mexico and driving all the way to the center of Guatemala. I am a very open minded and experienced traveller who has backpacked with folks from all over the world. For this trip I am looking for fellow adventurers to join me on this trip to help pass the good times and possibly share in some gas. Not sure if it will be camping, hotels or whatever. One 'issue' is that in Tamaulipas, the military presence (for increased security) has been removed because the state government wasn't paying them.

Yes, there was. Hence, the military presence. There were a couple of cities where the police were disbanded because they were so infiltrated by gangs. I'm pretty adventurous (foolish?) and have driven in parts of Tamaulipas and most of Veracruz. I live in Mexico full time and drive several thousand miles each year. But I've just been hesitant to venture up from Cd. Victoria towards Reynosa or Mat-ta-ta-ta-moros. Maybe I've just been lucky and don't want to roll the dice. Odds are you'd probably be OK. I did just drive from Laredo to Monterrey and then along the eastern side of the Sierra Madre in Nuevo Leon and can recommend some super scenic routes.
