Several of the "regulars" around here have been in Cuetzalan within the past 6 months to a year - including myself. I think it's a great place to visit and an excellent alternative to Oaxaca and some of the over-touristed destinations. When do you plan to go? The internet's full of information, as are the major guidebooks. I wrote some detailed trip reports for Cuetzalan last October but I think they've either become buried in the pages of discussions here, or maybe deleted by now. Click here and you'll be taken to my online photo albums, three or four of which are devoted to Cuetzalan.

From the Río Apulco up to la Cumbre, to Cuetzalan is one hell of a hairy road. (At least in 1980 and 2004). It's worth the ride, though.

Yeah, I loved Cuetzalan -- and didn't spend enough time there.

My husband lives in Libres, which is a smallish town on the way up there from Puebla, and we set out one morning thinking Cuetzalan would be like an hour to hour and a half drive, oops, it was more like three... the road was real hairy (this was the closest I have ever been to getting carsick in my life), but we were driving ourselves. It might be less freaky on a bus, I don't know.

Anyway, I would go there if you have a few days to spend, don't shortchange it, because if your carsick friend is going to make the trip, it better be worth it. =) There are waterfalls, at least a few good cave sites and the town itself. I can't wait to back, but next time we'll take the bus and I will probably have a glass of wine beforehand to relax myself.

Take travel sickness tablets! I suffer from car sickness on winding roads - but on the trip from Pochutla to Oaxaca, for example, I think I was the only person in the minibus NOT vomiting i.e. it's perfectly possible to avoid suffering on winding roads!

I don't think the road is all that bad, and I don't quite understand the comparison with the Pochutla > Oaxaca road. If car sickness is a problem, travel on many of Mexico's highways will be uncomfortable - for various reasons.

It really could have been my husband's driving... =)
