Can anybody give an update on safety in Oaxaca?

I´d heard that the government had "clamped down" on the people demonstrating but is it safe to go there as a backpacker?

Thanks

Sharon

Hi, I was there from Feb 5-11 with my husband, toddler and mum. Everything was fine, lots of tourists, everything was open and it was perfectly safe as far as I could see. The police presence still there and the graffiti has been painted over for the most part. Keep an eye on the situation - poster #2 is right about how things can change. It's definately worth it.

Just there a few days ago. Perfectly fine. Regarding the security presence, there are a few military guys around here and there, but I see 10 times as many cops around Times Square on a regular Saturday night. It was so peaceful that I couldn't imagine strife having happened just a few months back.
