Dear friends, my daughter (11 1/2 years old) and I will visit Mexico City in Christmas week and we are thinking of doing a volcano walk/trek/hike ( I am not sure which is the accurate term to use). After searching this forum, I want to book a tour with HG Mexico but am not sure whether we should go to Nevado de Toluca or Iztaccihuatl. We only look for 1-day program.

Nevado de Toluca - could decide when we arrive in the mountain whether to do lake or summit or both. 5-7hrs walk
Iztaccihuatl - walk up to 4450m of the first crater, 4-5 hrs walk.

In general we don't want to exhaust ourselves. Which program do you think is more suitable for us? Is it too much for a 11 yr old? Which one has better view?

Thanks in advance.

The appeal of Toluca is that you can drive nearly to the top and so are relatively sure of making the summit, and whatever view that gives you. At Iztaccihuatl, you´ll be nowhere near the top of the mountain, but you´ll have fantastic views of Popo, which will appear to close it´s scary. There is of course a lot of pollution over Mexico City, so don´t expect to see any urban landmarks, but you will see other mountains. For example, I remember seeing Toluca from the summit of Mt Tlaloc a year ago.

Either walk, trek or hike is acceptable. I don´t think there will be nay climbing involved. For your own benefit, read up about the symptoms of altitude sickness if you´ve never been this high before, and ask your child´s doctor if that´s a concern. .

Another option, if offered, is to hike to the summit of Malinche.

PS: your child may surprise you with their energy, but ask about a helmet for them, kids don´t have great judgement.

Thanks mclarjh. We both have been to similar or higher altitudes. One concern here is there will be no acclimatization. Popo is quite active these days and I wonder how safe it is to Iztaccihuatl. To summit is definitely not our goal and we are looking for a combination of good hike and good views. In this case, maybe we'll go to Iztaccihuatl.
