I am moving to Puebla, Mexico this August. I will be teaching english to first graders at a private school there. I know basically nothing about Mexico or living abroad. I heard this was an excellent site to connect with knowledgeable people! Anyone have any useful information or tips for me about living in Mexico, expecially the Puebla area???? I would love any imput or suggestions that you have. I have my Lonely Planet Mexico book but I was hoping to hear from people who actually live or have lived in that area.

Thanks!

Courtney

Why would you make such a decision . . . without first investigating further?

Courtney -- don't mind Longford. He's the resident hater...

My husband is from Puebla (1.5 hours out of the city though) and he lived in the city for a while a few years back. I have spent bits and pieces of time in Puebla city, and I have loved it, but without any long-term experience, I can't help you with a lot of the details you are looking for. I will say, the central city is gorgeous, it looks I thought Europe would look like, and it's busy and chaotic and smells like a million foods at once.

I'm curious about your teaching program.. are you a teacher, and you got the job that way? Or did you just decide to do something abroad, and this came up. We might be moving to Puebla in the future, which is why I ask. My husband knows the city well, but I will have to look for employment, and of course, teaching is one of my options.

Anyway, lots of luck, try to ignore Longford, there are a lot of nice people on this board. =)

Actually in response to you Longford, I have investigated it and talked to the teachers that teach at the school that I will be working at and the coordinator. The reason I came on here is to try and get some other viewpoints and information and besides what ever happen to spontaneity and living life on the edge :-) Thanks for your input though.

Thanks you for your input Laura (really, no sarcasm is attached to this :-) Yes, I am currently a third grade teacher in Brooklyn. I got the job by looking on teaching abroad sites. I have always wanted to live in another country and to learn to speak Spanish. This move didn't seem as drastic as moving to some place in Europe or Japan, which were some of the other areas I was looking into. The recruiter I used to get the job was through global-ers.com. So if you are thinking of moving to Puebla and teaching you should look into that site. Where do you currently live?

Hi again... Well, I live in Milwaukee. My husband and I are stuck in an immigration quagmire. We will hear in the next few months basically if he will be allowed back into the country (he was here illegally before we were married). Just an FYI, he's not a criminal, but for anyone who might be under the impression that marrying a U.S. citizen means a person will most likely become a PR, it's not true. It's quite complicated and it sucks! Okay, I'm having a bad day with my feelings about immigration...

Anyway, so, Puebla city would be one of our top choices if we do end up moving to Mexico. His town and the Xalapa area would be our other options right now. It would depend as well where I could find work and what he would decide to do. Anyway, that's why I ask about your teaching situation I'm not a teacher, which I realize is important in many cases to teach in Mexico as well... but I just like to save any options or leads in case we are in the situation to be moving there...

Well, I think you will love Puebla. I hope you get some more constructive feedback later... I'm not sure I have heard of anyone around here who lives in Puebla, but I might be wrong.

viajeralaura's one of the resident mental cases, so don't mind her, either - she's posted "stories" that are, I think, for the most part unbelieveable and she reguarly stalks and attacks. A garden variety troll.

As for my question - you might want to better phrase your own questions/comments and give us a little more information - without expecting others to be mind readers. You presented a picture of someone who made an important decision totally imprepared. Read something nasty into my question if you want - but that says more about you than me.

LMAO! Could you provide some examples of my unbelievable stories? I was recently warned about the Textpersonal attacks by another member of this board.. and two days later, here they came.

WOW! Maybe you two should refrain from speaking to one another! For the record I think that Laura sounds like a nice, helpful person not a stalker or a liar. Longford, do you actually have any helpful words or wisdom about Mexico or information or are you just looking to insult what I have posted?

So far Laura I have only heard good things about Puebla. I hope everything works out with your husband. Btw you don't have to be a teacher or have any experience teaching to work at a school teaching English in Mexico. It really helped me beat out some other people for the job but I am pretty sure it is not a requirement.

I've read and I've read and perhaps I may have finally figured something out that has eluded me for some time.

BM is tone deaf - from both ends of reading perception, both in receptive and expressive language. It's not that he is an hubristic, unctuous old fart, BM just can't get the tone of the sentences he reads or types.

A simple question is transformed into the rantings of a simpleton because he completely misses the tone of the question.

A point of clarification becomes a personal attack.

A rebutal becomes the sly subtrefuge of a multi-handled troll.

Whether enlightenment or rationalization, this works for me.
