One million Canadians visit Mexico each year. 172 incidents over 7 years is 25 per year. That's equivalent to a crime rate of 2.5 reported incidents per 100,000 population. The crime rate for Canada is about 7,700 per 100,000 population. So it's actually safer in Mexico than staying home.
nexus, just stay on yc where you belong, talking about your lesbian experiences and blow jobs. i live here and have discovered i tip more than yanquis-so what.now have a good night diddling yourself-SNORK!

I have to wonder what is the motivation behind this recent increase in animosity/fear/negative propaganda in Canada regarding Mexico. I can think of a number of reasons that might prompt it. One is a simple fear and missunderstanding of things foreign, most cultures have an element of domonizing those who are different. It could also be part jelousy, listening to my many Canadian relatives moan about the winters, some may make themselves feel better about not being able to go to Mexico by putting it down. Another explanation could be economic/political. All of those Canadian vacation dollars and even more pension dollars being spent in a place where the politicians in Canada can't tax them has to make someone take notice.
Whatever the reason(s) the whole idea is ridiculous. Crime happens everywhere, if it were so excessive in Mexico the retiries would be clearing out, they aren't.
yes scardro-pedro, I am a big ol' YC Lesbian. Thanks for letting me know. I had nooooooo idea!

"...it's actually safer in Mexico than staying home....."
Quite true!
The night after my return from Tonga someone was murdered on the street 2 blocks from my house-part of some ongoing Drug War here in Vancouver.
Being exhausted from the trans Pacific travel I blissfully slept through the car chase, flying bullets and emergency vehicle sirens.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – An American senior citizen killed an alleged mugger with his bare hands, and his traveling companions aboard a tour bus fended off two other assailants in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said.
The American, who is about 70 years old and retired from the military, put the 20-year-old in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the suspect and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus, said Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose. The suspect, Warner Segura, was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation.
If Canadiens were as tough as Americans they would be fine.At first I thought this was Goodtime Bob, but he is younger

I doubt mant Canadians assaulted in USA report them to the embassy, rather we believe the police report is sufficient. In Mexico we would tend to also go to the embassy because we are in a "foreign" country.
I have always felt safer in Mexico than driving through downtown Detroit, or walking around Jane/Finch in Toronto. Tourists have to be smart and stay away from those dangerous areas in any country. Don't go into a local bar and start dancing with some locals girlfriend or causing a fight.

Another angle to consider-many Canadians drink to excess in Mexico-booze is cheap and they have tendency to overdo things.
It's easy to fall into trouble when soused but Mexico is considered to be a Shangri La for drunken Canadians because if you pass out you won't freeze to death in a snow bank.
Don't laugh I know 2 people that happened to in my old home town-another who was lying drunk in the road and was run over by another drunkard/crippled for life.
